Governor Palin: Abuse Of Power?

The ethics probe into Governor Palin was released with much fanfare. The report issued from Alaska regarding Governor Palin does not change my opinion of her one bit. The investigation started with the best intention, but turned political once Governor Palin was announced as Senator McCain’s running mate:

Hot Air: Investigation Summary (links to original report)

If anything, I have more respect for Todd Palin for wanting to protect his family and rid Alaskan law enforcement of a bad cop. Lost in this façade is the issue at the heart of the matter, Trooper Wooten. Wooten was found in violation of 11 infractions:

  • 3 counts of Unbecoming Conduct
  • 3 Counts of Personal Misconduct
  • 1 Count of Failure to Perform Duties Properly
  • 2 Counts for failing to Conform to Laws
  • 1 Count of Illegal Use of Alcohol
  • 1 Count of Operation to be prudent and lawful

Wooten's Suspension Notice

Two of the more serious charges would have immediately resulted in his firing with almost every police force in the country:

  • Wooten used a Taser on his stepson (Note: Wooten was a Taser instructor, and knew the dangers of using a Taser on a 10-year old)
  • He drank beer in his patrol car on one occasion

As a former police officer for over 11 years I am baffled how Wooten was not only allowed to remain as police officer, but how he wasn’t charged criminal for his actions. Wooten’s suspension report says it all:

“….these violations is of grave concerns.”

“….demonstrated poor judgment…”

“…a conscience choice you made you made to violate the department’s standards of conduct.

Trooper Wooten should not have been allowed to remain on the job, and Palin did nothing inappropriate. Had this been another time, and not associated with the Presidential election, the Palin’s would have been labeled as heroes for trying to purge Alaska of a police officer of Wooten’s poor character.

Conservative or Liberal, Democrat or Republiican, what would you have done if a person such a Wooten was allowed to remain on the job, at great risk the safety of the public?
